The holiday season is upon us! Too often this time of year becomes dominated by commercialization and ‘stuff.’ At NW Earth Institute, we are always looking for ways to simplify. We invite you to prioritize time for both personal reflection as well as time in community this season. As Hans Hoffman says, “The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.” Here are a few resources to consider this month as we navigate what is often a busy and commercialized time.
A great place to start is to check out the Center for A New American Dreams’ Simplify the Holidays Campaign. Their campaign offers tips and resources that will help reduce stress and increase personal fulfillment during the holiday season. Every year, the Center for a New American Dream creates resources designed to help people escape the shopping, spending, and frenzied preparations that have become synonymous with the winter holidays. In 2016 they released a new resource: The More Fun, Less Stuff Holiday Gift Catalog. Its a great resource for those who want to wrap their holidays in more of what matters – meaning, connection, and joy – and less of what doesn’t – stuff, stress, and waste. It’s filled with hundreds of meaningful gift ideas designed to strengthen relationships and improve lives without breaking the bank or our planet.
If you are looking for a meaningful gift to give while also supporting the work of the NW Earth Institute, consider giving a book gift membership. Your support helps us build communities of change across the globe, and with any of our membership bundles you’ll receive a course book of your choice. Also – we’re busy finalizing our newest discussion course book on simple living, which will be available in February! A Different Way: Living Simply in a Complex World connects our individual values and actions to the larger picture and helps us to find power to make real change in our lives, communities, and in the world at large.
We hope you and yours create time and space for the ‘necessary’ to speak this month and as we enter into a new year!
