Hot on the heels of this week’s People’s Climate March, we here at NWEI are gearing up for our own community action October 15-29th: the 2014 EcoChallenge! What better time to jump in and join the millions of people acting for change? You can pick an EcoChallenge from these categories: water conservation, energy efficiency, sustainable food options, alternative transportation, trash reduction, or civic engagement, or choose your own challenge.
In solidarity with all the global climate action and awareness this week, we have three easy EcoChallenge ideas for you to consider. Here we go!
- EcoChallenge Idea 1 – Energy Efficiency: Power Down! Power down your computer and monitor when you won’t be using it for more than 2 hours. You will save up to 1.1 lbs of CO2 per day that you do this.
- EcoChallenge Idea 2 – Alternative Transportation: Take the “2 mile challenge!” Bike or walk anytime you are going within a 2 mile radius. Or, commute by bus, carpool or bike to work for the two week challenge and use our online calculator to figure out how many CO2 emissions you are reducing. (And for those wanting to go even further, join Travis in using only human-powered transport for two weeks!)
- EcoChallenge Idea 3 – Civic Engagement: Letter Writing. Write 1 letter or make 1 phone call per day to a public official or company advocating for a specific positive action for Earth. (How about addressing climate change?)
No matter what you choose, we challenge you to change one habit that benefits both you and the planet. It’s a win-win that’s designed to inspire a lifetime of positive change.
