FMYI Founder, Justin Yuen, first took part in an NWEI program when he was a Nike employee in the early 2000s. He found the learning experience to be efficient and effective—important in the time-compressed corporate environment. He added that discussion course format allowed him to learn a lot from his colleagues.
As Justin was launching his own business, FMYI, in 2004 he wondered how NWEI’s model would apply to a technology services company. He decided to give it a try and found that the discussion course format was ideal for his small, multi-location operation. Like at Nike, the program was cost effective as both a sustainability learning tool and an employee engagement tool. And for Justin’s team, it gave them a gratifying way to connect with each other – which is especially important with employees spread from Oregon to Florida.
In addition, the experience with NWEI content and process laid the groundwork when FMYI decided to pursue B Corp status in 2011.
FMYI has completed multiple courses together, most recently Seeing Systems: Peace, Justice, and Sustainability. The course was well receive and pushed participants to think about sustainability more broadly than they had in the past.
Upon reflection, Justin adds that using NWEI as a tool to educate and engage his employees has helped them define what sustainability means at FMYI. And while not directly intending it, NWEI courses provided the necessary training to pursue B Corp status and continually evaluate and improve the Company’s commitment to social responsibility and will continue to support FMYI as they strive to continually improve their B Corp rating.
