Over 2,300 People Took on the 2013 EcoChallenge, Inspiring Enduring Change

CaptureThis year over 2,300 people participated in the 2013 EcoChallenge, including 166 teams – representing 100% growth in participation from last year! Teams participating included 32 corporate teams, 42 teams from college campuses, 13 K-12 school teams, 11 City and Government teams, 21 nonprofit teams and 38 families and community group teams. Ecova’s EcoChallenge team had over 250 employees participating, and local teams hailed from The Standard, Portland General Electric, Portland Community College and Portland State University, to name a few. Nationally, teams hailed from every region, including NWEI partner organization Arkansas Earth Institute, DePaul University, Michigan State, Sustainable New Jersey, Vermont Law School and Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania (with 105 participants!).

98% of participants report they will continue their EcoChallenge activities beyond the two week challenge, and 99% plan on participating again next year. Perhaps most telling are the personal stories shared. One participant cited “I loved connecting with families and friends about goals and motivating one another to try something new.” Another said “It made me mindful of the choices I made every day.” Others mentioned how the EcoChallenge pushed them to make lifestyle changes or raised awareness of the simple steps that we can all do to conserve, save energy, and make a difference. One of the participating Elementary School Green Teams noted, “my favorite part was witnessing the enthusiasm for tracking plastic usage and everyone trying to reduce it as much as possible.”

Thanks to all the individuals who joined the EcoChallenge this year, and for sharing some of your stories and impacts! Sign up now and you will automatically be notified when we do our EcoChallenge 2014 kickoff!
